ELECTORAL VIOLENCE : A former federal lawmaker and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Arochukwu Local Government, Hon. Nnanna Ngwu has condemned an act of violence and wanton destruction of property allegedly carried out by supporters of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during the botched Local government election in the LGA.
Reacting to the violence unleashed in some parts of the Local government, especially the attack carried out in Arochukwu Ward 3, Hon. Ngwu condemned what he described as hooliganism and vandalism carried out by people he called PDP thugs whose mission he alleged was to distract and intimidate the innocent old woman whom he said was the most popular candidate in the election.
According to him, he and other APC members were at the polling unit for the election in Ward 3 when information filtered in that some PDP thugs had stormed the house of the APC Councillorship candidate Mrs. Gladys Azubuike where they vandalised her house, destroyed her cars and other valuable properties.
He explained that he moved in quickly and restrained the youths of the area from embarking on retaliation to prevent total breakdown of law and order in the LGA, and disclosed that the victim of the violence in Ward 3 and the APC Councillorship candidate Mrs. Azubuike was assisted by the party as she later lodged a complaint at the police station, assuring that the APC would do everything legally possible to ensure that the woman whom he described as a grandmother gets justice.
The ex lawmaker expressed shock and disappointment that despite being in power for over 21 years in Abia, yet the PDP could neither campaign nor win elections on the strength of its achievements in Abia, but rather always resorts to violence and brigandage during elections, and warned that should ABSIEC go ahead to announce fake election results for Arochukwu, the commission would be consciously laying the foundation for breakdown of law and order.
Finally, the APC chieftain appealed to the youths of the area, especially the responsible ones not to give in to the provocative antics of PDP thugs whom he said were being used to unleash violence in an election as small as councillorship, because the sponsors knew that it would be impossible for them to win any free and fair election in the entire Arochukwu going by its poor leadership scorecard.
Reports from different parts of the state showed that the Local government election across the 17 local councils of the state witnessed widespread irregularities and violence with the Prof. Mkpa led ABSIEC being accused of outrightly writing results for the ruling PDP in a bid to achieve a predetermined outcome.
