Ehi Na Uguru Day: Otti Consolidates Peace In Isialangwa South.

Report by Ferdinand Ekeoma.

It was an atmosphere of glamour, funfair and rare display of spirit of brotherhood at Nvosi in Isialangwa South L.G.A of Abia state as the once warring communities of Umuehim and Umuguru came together for the first time in their history to celebrate what was tagged “Ehi na Uguru” day courtesy of a renowned Economist and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Alex Otti OFR.
It would be recalled that a few months ago, Dr. Alex Otti courageously brokered a peace deal between the two communities which brought the protracted leadership crisis and enmity ravaging the two communities to an end, and paved the way for the return of  peace and reunification of the people.
To ensure that the peace and reconciliation earlier achieved was consolidated, the financial expert took a step further by initiating and sponsoring a special event tagged “Ehi na Uguru Day” where the people gathered in their hundreds to celebrate their culture and engage in activities that would consolidate their bond as one people.
The “Ehi na Uguru Day” also featured a special football competition also sponsored by Dr. Otti in memory of his late parents, Late Mr./Mrs. Laz Otti. The football competition which involved four teams, saw Umuguru emerge the overall winners of the football competition after defeating Umuehim and thus went home with the cup and the number one cash prize.

Many other prizes were won by the teams that came second, third and fourth positions respectively.
To ensure greater motivation for all the teams and individuals that took part in the competition, prizes were won by the best player, best referee, best behaved team, highest goal scorer, best goalkeeper etc.

Addressing the highly elated crowd, Dr. Otti restated that the “Ehi na Uguru  Day” was initiated to consolidate the gains made in that part of Isialangwa South following the return of peace, and declared amidst applause that the event would henceforth hold on tbe 31st of every December. He further explained that the event was devoid of partisanship and made it clear that people should be free to associate with any political party of their choice, but that such should not be allowed to affect peace and development in the area.

Dr. Otti appealed to youths not to allow themselves to be used by selfish politicians and other unpatriotic citizens to destroy lives and properties, and stated emphatically that it’s only politicians who know that they are seeking public office for outright stealing that would want to kill to achieve that. He disclosed that beyond the quest for peace and unity through soccer , the Laz and Rose Otti football competition would help fish out hidden talents that would be assisted to excel in the round leather game like the likes of Kanu Nwankwo and JJ Okocha.

Dr. Otti also used the opportunity to inform the youths, especially undergraduates that entry for the 2020 edition of the Alex Otti Foundation Scholarship program had commenced and urged them to assess the foundation’s website so as to benefit from the scholarship, revealing that the scholarship program was structured in a way the beneficiaries would enjoy it till graduation as long as they maintain good academic performance.

The event was attended by dignitaries from all walks of life, including 14 traditional rulers from different parts of Ngwa land.
