NIGERIA WILL SURVIVE

By Okoi Obono-Obla

I am a through and through; indeed a dyed in wood Federalist! A Federalist believes in the Federal system of government. Nigeria federalism was introduced in 1951. It has survived for nearly 70 years, even though it has faced a lot of challenges.

Nigeria federation was founded on 14 January 1914 and has throttled on for 107 years despite numerous crises and challenges! It will survive ad infinitum by the Grace of God almighty.

I am a Nigerian Nationalist, a Pan-Africanist.

Nigeria is not the only country that is complex or diverse in its composition.
The United States of America is a Federation just like Brazil, India, Canada, Australia, United Arab Emirates. All these countries are a study in ethnic, race, geographical complexes of unimaginable proportion. But they still waxed strong!
Indonesia has 1 340 ethnic groups! Indonesia has 17,508 Islands, of which about 6000 are inhabited!
India has 2,000 ethnic groups!  Even though she is an emerging world power!

Diversity is a strength. Diversity is the spice of life. Life without diversity is boring and uninteresting.
There are political, military, and economic advantages to having a Big Country. This is an indisputable fact.
The advantage outweighs the disadvantages. Look at Europe. Europeans have fought many horrendous wars in their history, culminating in the First World War and the Second World War. Most of the wars fought by Europeans were just plain struggles or jostling over extreme nationalism and superiority among the various peoples that make up Europe.

The Europeans realized that they musty come together, coalesce, unify to withstand the United States of America, China, India, and other emerging world powers.
Today we have the European Union, a military, political, industrial, technological, and economic Power of immense influence and clout!

I even believe that the entire West Africa should become a Federation of 16 Countries.
The United States of America is a massive country. The flight time from the Northernmost part of the USA to the Southernmost part is about 7 hours! It is more than the flight time from Nigeria to Europe!

The problem of Nigeria is the lack of patriotic, competent, and enlightened leadership. It is not only in political leadership. We have a problem in all our strata of leadership, Traditional Leadership, economic and business leadership, Labour leadership, Academic leadership, and even the followership, we the People!
Nigeria shall remain One Indivisible Nation founded on democracy, political and economic justice, and constitutionalism. No to division, separation, etc.

We shall overcome all the challenges confronting and grappling with Nigeria. Every country has its peculiar and unique challenges.

Good people should step forward and give Nigeria leadership at all levels.
