Senate President Ahmad Lawan, on Wednesday, asked the Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to screen President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, and five other nominees as INEC National Commissioners.
Onochie was nominated alongside Prof. Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti), Saidu Ahmad (Jigawa), Prof. Muhammad Kallah (Katsina), Dr Baba Bila (North-East) and Prof Sani Adam (North- Central).
Recall that President Buhari sent their names to the Senate since October 2020, but their confirmation has been delayed due to reason(s) best known to Senate.
Presenting the request from the President Buhari at Senate plenary on Wednesday, the Senate majority leader, Yahaya Abdullahi ( Kebbi North ) asked the Senate to consider the request of President Buhari on the confirmation of the nominees as INEC Commissioners.
The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan ruled that the request is referred to the Senate Committee on INEC under the Chairmanship of Senator Kabiru Gaya, to conclude the screening in a month and report back to the red chamber at plenary.
